Stakeholder Management (SM) is a title that – unlike many of terms and labels found in business, which can over-elaborate or complicate the simplest of activities – does exactly what it says on the tin.  SM is a the practice of involving, understanding and working with any person who has a stake or interest in a project, task or piece of work  you are involved in.  If you’ve never heard of the term before, you might be surprised to learn that you’ll already be doing SM.  It is something we all do in our lives, both private and professional, from when we were kids: managing and dealing with people who have an interest in what we do.  The ‘management’ part of SM is perhaps the easiest to understand, as it involves simple, good management techniques.  I will cover this part later in this article, but for now, let us consider the ‘stakeholder’ aspect of SM.
